Custom Stickers - Don't Forget about Copyright Laws

I found an article on the news today about a photographer in Texas who is suing the state because millions of vehicle inspection stickers have being printed using one of his photos without his authorization.

The stickers were produced by state prison inmates and it seems the photo was illegally appropriated by an inmate who scanned it from a magazine.

This is quite a controversy here. Some people can argue the vinyl stickers use a derivative image of his photo, therefore, it doesn't represent an infringement to the copyright law.

On the other hand, as internet is making everything available for everybody some people believe there's nothing wrong. However, we have to disagree here, if a person finds images or pictures on the internet, it doesn't mean that he/she can use them, at least otherwise is specified. It's important to respect other people work and creations.

So, what do you think? Do you believe the photographer is right suing the state?
